Descripción
Sun City, canción y disco que en 1985 sirvió como medida de presión y protesta por el régimen apartheid que controlaba Sudafrica.
La idea de reunir a un buen grupo de artistas por esta causa partió del amigo de Bruce Springsteen y guitarrista de la E Street Band, Steve Van Zandt, después de un viaje por Sudáfrica para comprobar en primera persona la injusticia que se vivía en el pais, unida a la impasividad del gobierno de Estados Unidos.
La canción parte del lujoso complejo turístico y casinos llamado Sun City, una ciudad plagada de hoteles y todo tipo de lujo, teóricamente creada en una zona del pais regentada por negros africanos, similar a los complejos norteamericanos creados en reservas indias, y por donde, tristemente, habían pasado artistas consagrados de la época como Queen, Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, Julio Iglesias, The O'Jays, Ray Charles, Boney M., Black Sabbath, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick, Sarah Brightman, Laura Branigan y Thomas Anders (de Modern Talking), desafiando todos ellos el boicot cultural al que se pretendía someter al régimen del apartheid.
Pero después de esta canción todo cambió, el lema ahora era "NO TOCARÉ EN SUN CITY" y Van Zandt, junto con el productor Arthur Baker, se pusieron manos a la obra para reclutar artistas que colaborasen en el proyecto.
La respuesta no se hizo esperar: Bruce Springsteen, Kool DJ Herc, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Scorpio, Ruben Blades, Bob Dylan, Herbie Hancock, Ringo Starr y su hijo Zak Starkey, Lou Reed, Run DMC, Peter Gabriel, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Darlene Love, Bobby Womack, Afrika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow, Jackson Browne, Darryl Hannah, U2, George Clinton, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Bonnie Raitt, Hall & Oates, Jimmy Cliff, Big Youth, Michael Monroe, Peter Garrett, Ron Carter, Ray Barretto, Gil-Scott Heron, Nona Hendryx, Fat Boys, Pat Benatar, Joey Ramone y muchos otros.
Casi nada, todos gritando "Ain't gonna play Sun City".
La canción fué prohibida en Sudáfrica y en Estados Unidos gozó de una modesta repercusión, muy posiblemente por la posición explícitamente crítica con la postura del gobierno de Reagan ante la situación que se vivía en el pais africano, que provocó que los medios no le dieran mucha convertura aún teniendo el apoyo unánime de la crítica.
A pesar de todas las trabas, el proyecto de Van Zandt ha servido de gérmen para artistas como Johnny Clegg, que iniciaría iniciativas paralelas en Sudáfrica tiempo después.
